Serious and Non-Serious Corruption

By: Muhammad Saeed Araeen

According to NAB’s annual performance report, complaints of corruption in the country have been continuously declining. While this news is certainly encouraging, a closer look reveals that corruption has changed its form — it has not disappeared. Corruption in Pakistan is not limited to bribery; it also exists at the institutional, social, and administrative levels. Misuse of power, waste of resources, and the absence of accountability are also forms of corruption. In our country, serious corruption is what hollows out the system from within and causes damage to the public treasury. Non-serious corruption includes small-scale malpractice that affects everyday life. For reforms, it is essential that the accountability system be strengthened and that no one is above the law.
