Washington D.C. is considered the most fertile ground for the growth of lobbies and think tanks. The influence of lobbyist groups on American politics is an old and established fact. A similar situation is now visible in our own country, where various interest groups are influencing policy-making. When the oversight of state institutions is handed over to the very individuals they are supposed to monitor, what can the outcomes be? The old adage of “entrusting the milk to the cats” beautifully describes the weaknesses in our governance. Until accountability, transparency, and a robust system of answerability is established, the wastage of public resources will continue. The need of the hour is for oversight institutions to be independent and strong, and to be protected from political pressure.
