ISLAMABAD: (Dailytoday Network) Following Jamaat-e-Islami’s 29-day-long nationwide dharnas against rising petrol prices and the petroleum levy, the federal government has announced a petrol relief package for motorcycle, rickshaw, and small-car users.
Under the newly announced package, eligible consumers will receive a Rs100-per-litre reduction on petrol. The relief will be applicable to up to 20 litres per month for motorcycles and up to 30 litres per month for vehicles up to 800cc.
Officials said the relief package is set to take effect from the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
The government move comes days after Jamaat-e-Islami announced a long march towards Islamabad to protest inflation and the petroleum levy.
However, Jamaat-e-Islami has formally rejected the relief measures, calling them “inadequate”. The party has demanded a complete abolition of the petroleum levy instead of partial relief.
Political analysts believe the announcement is a direct response to the pressure built by JI’s protests across the country.
