Bangladesh: PM Will Not Visit India Until Hasina Wajid’s Extradition, Govt Issues Blunt Statement
Relations remain severely strained since former PM fled to India after 2024 public uprising
DHAKA: Bangladesh has announced that its Prime Minister will not undertake any visit to India until New Delhi extradites former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina Wajid, in what officials described as a “blunt and unequivocal” stance.
According to government sources, the decision comes amid severely strained bilateral ties following the 2024 public uprising in Bangladesh, after which the then-Prime Minister Hasina Wajid fled to India.
Since her departure, relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have remained tense, with Bangladesh repeatedly seeking her extradition. India has so far not handed her over.
A senior Bangladeshi official said the extradition of Hasina Wajid is a “matter of national priority” and a precondition for any high-level bilateral engagement. “Until this issue is resolved, a prime ministerial visit to India is off the table,” the official stated.
The development marks a new low in Bangladesh-India relations, which have historically been close but have deteriorated sharply since the political transition in 2024.
Analysts say the standoff could impact regional cooperation, trade, and connectivity projects between the two neighbors.
No immediate response has been issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
