Norwegian Parliament Speaker Resigns Over 11km Housing Scandal, Calls It “Unforgivable” And Offers To Pay Back

Detail News:Oslo: In a striking example of political accountability rarely seen in the world, the President of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting), Eva Kristin Hansen, has resigned from her post and apologized to the nation for what she herself called an “unforgivable” mistake. The scandal revolves around the misuse of a state-owned parliamentary apartment.According to Norwegian law, Members of Parliament are only allowed to use a free state-owned apartment in Oslo if their private home is located more than 40 kilometers away from the Parliament building. The investigation revealed that Hansen had been using a modest 50-square-meter apartment, consisting of just a living room and bedroom, owned by the state. However, her actual private residence was only 29 kilometers away from Parliament. This means the violation was for a difference of just 11 kilometers.Instead of justifying her act, Hansen took full moral responsibility. In her resignation statement, she said her actions had undermined public trust in the Parliament. Not only did she resign from the prestigious position of President of the Storting, but she also announced that she would reimburse the state for the financial loss incurred due to her stay out of her own pocket. Her resignation has sparked a global debate on social media, with many users comparing the high moral standards of Norwegian politics with the corruption scandals in other countries where politicians often refuse to resign even after major financial scams.Eva Kristin Hansen, who belongs to the Labour Party, had been serving as the President since October 2021 and resigned in November 2021 after the scandal came to light.
